Letter to the Brethren: August 28, 2025

Greetings from Grover Beach, California.

Last Sabbath, we again spent a lot of time on the ‘Behind the Works’ video. It is not perfect, but of course, none of us are. Yet, it covers several topics and several parts of the world.

I  have also been working on a new book that I plan to do a sermon series on related to what happened to original, apostolic, Christianity. But that will take some time before it is close to being properly usable for sermons.

Anyway, all that is to say we did not video a new sermon last Sabbath. However, we recorded an extra sermon video several months ago that we never had put in as a suggested sermon for the Sabbath until now.

It is titled:  Lucian of Antioch: Scripture vs. Allegorists.

Ancient portrayal intended to be of Lucian of Antioch
(Public domain sketch)

Lucian of Antioch has a Sabbath-keeper who ran a school on theology. His approached differed from the school in Alexandria as that school preferred to teach allegory as opposed to believing the actual word of God means what it says. Lucian’s school in Antioch took a much more literal approach to scripture. The scholars of the Greco-Roman Catholic and Protestant churches tend to prefer the allegorical teaching, whereas we in the Continuing Church of God support the more literal expounding of the Bible. Lucian of Antioch is one who is in out apostolic succession list.

That said, although he is honored by the Seventh-day Adventist church, unlike the modern trinitarian SDAs, Lucian of Antioch held a binitarian/semi-arian view of the Godhead like we in the Continuing Church of God do.

Lucian of Antioch was martyred for his faith.

Pray for Wisdom

(Pixabay illustration)

The Apostle James, the half-brother of Jesus wrote:

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. (James 1:5-8)

The Book of Proverbs gives many reasons why wisdom is important.

Here is what its eighth chapter teaches:

1 Does not wisdom cry out,
And understanding lift up her voice?
2 She takes her stand on the top of the high hill,
Beside the way, where the paths meet.
3 She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city,
At the entrance of the doors:
4 “To you, O men, I call,
And my voice is to the sons of men.
5 O you simple ones, understand prudence,
And you fools, be of an understanding heart.
6 Listen, for I will speak of excellent things,
And from the opening of my lips will come right things;
7 For my mouth will speak truth;
Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8 All the words of my mouth are with righteousness;
Nothing crooked or perverse is in them.
9 They are all plain to him who understands,
And right to those who find knowledge.
10 Receive my instruction, and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choice gold;
11 For wisdom is better than rubies,
And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.

12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
And find out knowledge and discretion.
13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverse mouth I hate.
14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom;
I am understanding, I have strength.
15 By me kings reign,
And rulers decree justice.
16 By me princes rule, and nobles,
All the judges of the earth.
17 I love those who love me,
And those who seek me diligently will find me.
18 Riches and honor are with me,
Enduring riches and righteousness.
19 My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold,
And my revenue than choice silver.
20 I traverse the way of righteousness,
In the midst of the paths of justice,
21 That I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth,
That I may fill their treasuries.

22 “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way,
Before His works of old.
23 I have been established from everlasting,
From the beginning, before there was ever an earth.
24 When there were no depths I was brought forth,
When there were no fountains abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains were settled,Before the hills, I was brought forth;
Before the hills, I was brought forth;
26 While as yet He had not made the earth or the fields,
Or the primal dust of the world.
27 When He prepared the heavens, I was there,
When He drew a circle on the face of the deep,
28 When He established the clouds above,
When He strengthened the fountains of the deep,
29 When He assigned to the sea its limit,
So that the waters would not transgress His command,
When He marked out the foundations of the earth,
30 Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman;
And I was daily His delight,
Rejoicing always before Him,
31 Rejoicing in His inhabited world,
And my delight was with the sons of men.

32 “Now therefore, listen to me, my children,
For blessed are those who keep my ways.
33 Hear instruction and be wise,
And do not disdain it.
34 Blessed is the man who listens to me,
Watching daily at my gates,
Waiting at the posts of my doors.
35 For whoever finds me finds life,
And obtains favor from the Lord;
36 But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul;
All those who hate me love death.”  (Proverbs 8:1-36)

Note that we are to listen to what the word of God teaches.

Wisdom is something we can all use more of.

Suggested Sabbath Service

Here is a suggested Sabbath day service for our scattered brethren and other interested people:

Note: If you have a slow internet connection, you can watch these by starting the video, then below it (and towards the right) look for an outline of a gear–if you click on that, it will allow the YouTube video to be played with lower video quality, but at least it will not stop often–you can select a quality as low as 144p. If your internet connection is still too slow (as my home one is) and/or you prefer audio messages to audio-visuals ones, go to the YouTube link for the message, click on SHOW MORE related to the description. You will then see something that says, “Download MP3.” Below that is a link to an MP3 file. Most computers (and even some mobile telephones) will allow MP3 files to be downloaded and played. This is an option we have made available (but we are also looking into ways to improve that as well)–and, of course, we have written article options. Some people have found that if their internet connections are not fast enough, that they can simply listen to the messages that are found at the Bible News Prophecy online radio channel.

IN CASE YOU DO NOT RECEIVE A ‘LETTER TO THE BRETHREN’ FOR ANY WEEK, REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE MANY SERMON MESSAGES ON THE ContinuingCOG channel AND MANY SERMONETTE MESSAGES ON THE Bible News Prophecy channel. There are also some messages at the CCOGAfrica channel. There are also messages in the Spanish language at the CDLIDDSermones  channel.

In case one or more of our video channels are unavailable, down, restricted, or ?, understand that we are on multiple platforms.

World News Items

We see some technical and non-technical ways to support brain health in the news (see Improving brain health). Eating a more natural diet with berries, green leafy vegetables, fish, and vegetable oil, along with exercising and avoiding sweets does help.

The government of Canada has basically decided it had little or no choice but to accept bullying trade tactics from the Trump Administration (see Canada again bends the knee to the USA on trade). While most nations have little choice but to accept newly imposed trade policies from the USA, there will be many unintended consequences. There is, and will be, costs associated with tariffs and bullying.

The Europeans are trying to make a new trade deal in the Middle East and North Africa (see European Union taking steps to increase trade to Middle East because of US trade policies). We know that a deal between the European King of the North and the Middle Eastern/North African King of the South will happen (e.g. Daniel 11:25; cf. Psalm 83:4-8). This trading proposal looks to be a small prelude to improve relations between both.

The government of Denmark raised objections to the USA taking covert steps related to Greenland (see Denmark upset with Trump Administration’s ‘covert operations’ in Greenland)–the USA is turning many nations against it. There are many “unintended consequences” of policies of the Trump Administration.

Protestant writer Michael Snyder noted that we are in a time of wars and rumors of war, and even the government of New Zealand has decided it needs more military spending (see Wars and Rumors of War, New Zealand spending, plus India and China have more than enough people to support the coming 200 million man army). While the end is not yet (Matthew 24:6), we are getting much closer to the end.

Concluding Comments

The Book of Acts has the following:

1 Now after five days Ananias the high priest came down with the elders and a certain orator named Tertullus. These gave evidence to the governor against Paul.

2 And when he was called upon, Tertullus began his accusation, saying: “Seeing that through you we enjoy great peace, and prosperity is being brought to this nation by your foresight, 3 we accept it always and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness. 4 Nevertheless, not to be tedious to you any further, I beg you to hear, by your courtesy, a few words from us. 5 For we have found this man a plague, a creator of dissension among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes. 6 He even tried to profane the temple, and we seized him, and wanted to judge him according to our law. 7 But the commander Lysias came by and with great violence took him out of our hands, 8 commanding his accusers to come to you. By examining him yourself you may ascertain all these things of which we accuse him.” 9 And the Jews also assented, maintaining that these things were so.

10 Then Paul, after the governor had nodded to him to speak, answered: “Inasmuch as I know that you have been for many years a judge of this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself, 11 because you may ascertain that it is no more than twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem to worship. 12 And they neither found me in the temple disputing with anyone nor inciting the crowd, either in the synagogues or in the city. 13 Nor can they prove the things of which they now accuse me. 14 But this I confess to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect, so I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the Law and in the Prophets. 15 I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust. 16 This being so, I myself always strive to have a conscience without offense toward God and men.” Acts 24:1-16)

Notice that the Apostle Paul was accused of sedition. It was a false charge, yet numerous people wrongly asserted it was true.

Why mention that now?

Well, in addition to false charges that have been made against CCOG and other COG leaders, the time will come when government officials are basically going to say that we are traitors, seditionists, potential terrorists, extremists, spewers of ‘hate speech,’ etc., because we proclaim the truths of the Bible, expound the fulfillment of certain prophecies, and teach the coming kingdom of God.

Brethren, do not fall for false accusations, but support the proclamation of the truth, despite it being “spoken against everywhere” (Acts 28:22).

Sincerely,

Bob Thiel
